Reds look to repeat after stunning run to Central crown

By Bud L. Ellis

The Reds stunned the baseball world, growing up faster than expected and pulling away from the powerful St. Louis Cardinals in the final two months of the season to capture the National League Central championship. ( Read More…)

Reds give Cueto four-year extension

The Cincinnati Reds and pitcher Johnny Cueto have agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $27 million.

The deal helped the two sides avoid salary arbitration for both the upcoming season and in future years.

He went 12-7 with a 3.64 ERA last year, which set career highs in wins, ERA and innings pitched.

Cueto is expected to be one of the top pitchers in Cincinnati’s starting rotation for years to come. ( Read More…)

Votto gets new deal

Cincinnati Reds star first baseman Joey Votto received a three-year contract extension worth $38.3 million.

The contract pays Votto through his three arbitration years, and he likely would have made significantly more than $38 million over that period of time.

Votto is coming off of a break-through season where he beat out Albert Pujols for the MVP award.

He became known as one of the most clutch hitters in the game with all of his game-winning hits. ( Read More…)

Reds sign Renteria

The Cincinnati Reds have signed shortstop Edgar Renteria to a one-year contract after helping the Giants win the World Series.

Renteria will take over for shortstop Orlando Cabrera, who left after the Reds did not pick up his option.

Renteria considered retirement when the Giants opted not to bring him back despite the fact he won MVP of the World Series.

He was partially convinced to return by GM Walt Jocketty, who knew him from their days together in St. Louis. ( Read More…)

Reds swept by Phillies

The upstart Cincinnati Reds saw their postseason experience end ubruptly at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The three-game sweept was certainly not what Cincinnati fans had in mind after such a long postseason wait.

It was a rough Sunday in Cincinnati, as the Bengals lost at home to the Bucs and the Reds were knocked out of the playoffs.

Edmonds leaning toward retirement

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jim Edmonds said he is leaning toward shutting things down at the end of the season.

The 40-year old outfielder made the Milwaukee Brewers after signing a minor league contract and was later traded to the contending Reds. He did not play baseball at all in 2009, which has made the situation a little more difficult for everybody.

Edmonds said he wants to be a family man again and that his wife and kids are struggling with him being gone.

If Edmonds does indeed call it a career, he can hold his head up high. He was a great defensive player and a solid hitter in his prime.

Reds move Volquez to bullpen

The Cincinnati Reds have decided to move the struggling Edinson Volquez from the starting rotation to the bullpen.

Volquez, who is coming off of Tommy John surgery, has been erratic in his starts since returning from the disabled list.

With the Reds in a dogfight with the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central, they can’t afford to throw games away.

Volquez could be more effective coming out of the bullpen where he pitches just an inning or two at a time.

Rookie Travis Wood, who has been phenomenal so far this season, will take his spot in the rotation.
